Prairie Fire

So,

I got the new issue of Prairie Fire in the mail today, and I was stoked to see my friend Jordan has a short story published in it.

Jordan was the first person I met in my program. He took me out for beers a few days before classes, and he's generally just a super laid back, friendly dude.

He's also the poetry editor of PRISM, but apparently he can write fiction too!

His story "The Bounty from Locust Jack" is about a man searching for his drug-addicted brother Lee in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

Part of it takes place in Oppenheimer Park, which reminded me of Mike Christie's "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", but Jordan's writing is a lot more melancholy and dark. I found his story really disturbing and sad.

Check out this description of the view from a North Shore high rise:

"As I stare at the city, removed from everything, I can see no Downtown Eastside, no alleyways or needles or people huddled in the uprotected niches between storefronts. I can see only the million-dollar view and the fray of Turner's beige carpet that cushions my feet. Lee is still down there somewhere."

Weirdly enough, I also got to see Jordan perform for the first time at Locution (the UBC MFA program's reading series) tonight. He did some experimental poetry where he looped his voice over his own voice multiple times. It was confusing and overwhelming and awesome.

Anyways, I think you should check out Jordan's stuff. Here's his WEBSITE and you can follow him on Twitter @jordoisdead

That's all.

Will!!
